Steel wires

Gender inequality is one of the oldest issues in most of the societies with sons getting preferential treatment over daughters in underdeveloped and developing countries. Emphasis on women education, employment, giving them due status in the society and creating awareness among the people to treat son and daughter alike would be better options to eliminate frustration, reduce fertility rate and limit family size.
Recently, family standards of living has dramatically increased with more women in the labour force. Contemplation of whether the girl child will be of any use to the family or not, before and after marriage is gradually becoming a thing of the past.

Sail to Innse Gall is an imaginary landscape created about a place I would love to go and have never been. I was born and raised in the Isle of Man and have a strong Celtic connection. My family sailed around the Irish Sea, Lower and Upper Hebrides. Once I sailed with my Dad to the Island of Mull and always wished I'd been able to go again. He and I would sit at the Point of Ayre, the most northerly tip of the Isle of Man looking towards Scotland and particularly Stranraer. I now live on the South Coast of the UK but my work is about imaginary landscapes and my personal feelings about them.

This series of six heads is part of a body of work, exploring what emotions look like and feel like. Inspired by Charles Darwin's lesser-known theory which defined expressions of emotions as universal whether you live in the Outer Hebrides or Outer Mongolia. The piece follows the six emotions that Darwin highlighted as fundamental to human evolution: Happiness, sadness, surprise, fear, anger and disgust. The heads have been sculpting in different types of clay.

This painting in ink on 300gms handmade paper is based on a dramatic view of Neist Point on Skye, using photographs and memory. The ink (always painted on wet paper) helps to increase the drama and deep feeling that I have for this part of Skye in particular. Pen, Ink and Goache on Japanese Rice Paper
h: 33 w: 24 (cms).
This piece is a tribute to the Hebridean Mermaid.
It is rumoured that there is a mermaid's grave in Benbecula.
Around 1900, the following tale was published about the island of Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland:
"Some seventy years ago, people were cutting seaweed at Sgeir na Duchadh, Grimnis, Benbecula. Before putting on her stockings, one of the women went to the lower end of the reef to wash her feet. While doing so she heard a splash in the calm sea, and looking up she saw a creature in the form of a woman in miniature, some few feet away. Alarmed, the woman called to her friends, and all the people present rushed to the place. The creature made somersaults and turned about in various directions. Some men waded into the water to seize her, but she moved beyond their reach. Some boys threw stones at her, one of which struck her in the back. A few days afterwards, this strange creature was found dead at Cuile, Nunton, nearly two miles away."

Here I have depicted her gazing out to sea sat on a rock near a headland under the night sky.

The title comes from the John Martyn song of the same name, although has no direct connection with the lyrics or motives behind Martyn's superb music.
A Harbour is what a safe sanctuary represents a place of security and solidity.Asylum Harbour was the original name give to Dun Laoghaire harbour, lying on the Southernmost shore of Dublin Bay, Ireland.Construction began in 1842, 11.2km from Dublin city.
Its two breakwaters, known as the East Pier and West Pier and are 1,290 metres and 1,548 metres in length respectively. It has an enclosed water area of approximately 215 acres. It has its own identity and character that is distinct from the rest of the town. Its character is derived from its form, material uses, sounds and smells. The form of the harbour is generated by its two huge arms and sheer mass, which encloses a great expanse of water. The strongest aspect is this spatial quality that overcomes its mass, rather than gravity or space.
Over time it has had a number of transformations, that have not just changed its physicality, but its purpose and meaning. It has become disconnected, the purpose for which Dun Laoghaire Harbour was built is no longer required. Any hope rests, in projects that can take advantage of the giant structure original intention.
It was the starting point of a first voyage to Scotland and the outer Hebredies in 1976 and then another journey North around the Orkneys in the mid 90’s. Both on small boats,so exposed to the wild coastline of the Western Isles and its rugged beauty. Or as the ancients referred to it as Ultima Thule- the limit of any journey.

The meeting of land and sea has always been an inspiration for me. The constant pummeling of waves against rigid, impermeable rock, the sound, smell and saturation of salt water runs through me like blood. I drew, painted a bit (it was very windy) on this bit of coastline near the Butt of Lewis and completed it in the relative calm of my studio. It is double mounted on white with a grey frame 92cm wide). Unframed price would include the mount.

'Vessels 1' is part of a series of paintings made during lockdown when focus turned inwards to the emotional world and to home. In the home a simple vessel may hold sustenance, a posy of flowers, objects we wish to keep safe, or be a thing of value in its own right, for its beauty or the associations it holds.
This painting was inspired by a newspaper article about the moral dilemma of buying a coffee during lockdown. Do we queue up for a throwaway paper cup of something we can easily get in the safety of our own home to support a local business and have a quick slug of 'normal' life? Or stay home, stay safe, protect the NHS and enjoy a cup of Java out of a favourite old mug?

In this painting the 'landscape' is presented, as if viewed from above, as a series of intersecting shapes, textures and colours - similar to the 'landscapes' found in the patterns and textures of the built environment when seen close-up.
'Containment 1' was inspired by the conflicting feelings of security and restriction experienced during lockdown, when emotions and perceptions were turned on their head. Graphic shapes combine with organic forms to represent the dichotomy of the experiece of being contained - weaving into the 'landscape' the emotions and felt-sense of the artist.

Guided by a love of the sea and a deep seated desire to be close to water, this book is my little hommage to all things aqueous. Dotted through the book are words pertaining to water, from baptise through to submerge.
Of Water is a set of three artist books. They are constructed as lotus books and fit into a small, purpose made box - 12 x 12 cms. The paper I used is a delicate, trnaslucent Japanese tissue, which has been dipped in a mixture of sea water and pigment.

oil and metal leaf on cradled wood
h: 40 w: 60 d: 2 (cms).
Light and Shadow - diptych, oil and metal leaf on wood.
Beside duality, and light and shadow, the concept of this painting is visually describing both: dark times when we need to activate our inner idealist - Neptune - and lean on spirituality and bypass all the negative feelings in order to pull through the hardship; and times when things are quite good and it's finally safe for all the stuffed emotions to come up to the surface in order to be acknowledged and integrated - Pluto. In a way it's descriptive of the virus situation right now, where most of us can observe the fear and panic, and all the dark that's been sitting inside humanity for a while, all in a relatively safe place, with food, heat, wi-fi and comfort.

…… In the Domesday Book of 1086, Salthouse is entered simply as ‘a house for the storing of salt.’ Long before this, salt was made by the then worldwide method of boiling sea water in clay vessels; Cley is Anglo-Saxon ‘claeg’ for clay. It follows then that these two adjacent coastal settlements have connections going way back in time....
The clay (Cley) bowls seen here represent those bowls used historically to make the salt to be stored in the salt house.

Oil on Canvas
h: 60 w: 90 d: 1 (cms).
This painting is about the incredible light on the Outer Hebrides and the contrast in both light and colour brought about by the ever changing weather. In particular the painting is about the moment I came to the crest of the hill above Luskentyre and saw the storm clouds lifting over the sea, revealing the sun in the late afternoon, and how the light shone throught the mist still rolling over the hills in the foreground.

'Containment 3' is part of a series inspired by the changes to life during lockdown. Perceptions have shifted. Priorities have changed. The standpoint of the viewer has altered. The traditional landscape, something normally travelled to, to experience, is no longer available.
This piece relates to the memories (some real, some optimistically imagined) of ancient and distant cities that hold many layers of human experience within their structure and materials.

Acrylic, newsprint, oil pastel and pencil, on plywood board
h: 30 w: 30 d: 5 (cms).
'Containment 2' is part of a series inspired by the changes experienced during lockdown when the idea of 'landscape' shifted from the traditional and expansive views of ancient Scottish hills and glens to the patterns and details found in the surfaces around the west end of Glasgow - patches of moss on old masonary, flaky paintwork on lamp posts, cracks in pavements, remnants of posters peeled from hoardings, old papered walls hanging in limbo on a demolition site when work has abruptly come to a halt - all imperfect yet beautiful in their own way.
This piece explores the ways in which 'home' may or may not be a safe place for many during this crisis.

This drawing is part of a body of work called /HYPNAGOGIA/ as a contemporary interpretation of the classical Biblical apocalypse/dystopia. The work merges Judeo-Chistian symbology with that of collective dreams, creating a very recognisable framework of imagery but without any direct didacticism. The style of work is heavily influenced by Byzantine icons due to their utilisation of flatness.

Video
ONLY CONSIDER THE SECOND IMAGE ... THE VIDEO FOR INCLUSION FOR THE EXHIBITION
The first image is simply uploaded in case the system will not accept the still from the video.
The installation is a video of about 2 minutes. It can be looped if wished. The title is "The Gathered Storm". I shot the footage, edited the film and added the voiceover spoke by the writer Andy Allan.
The video shows the effect of the elements of wind and air on the land and offers a ultimate a kind of redemption after storm. This is shown in the film where the end frames offer birdsong, heralding the end of turbulent weather.
The film can be a metaphor of hard times or difficult situations with an eventual resolution.
Viewers can interpret these images and words in whichever they wish... For example storm at sea threatening the fishing community and fisherfolk, or the current pandemic Covid-19.
The image shown is not from the film but the application required an image and so I have included an image of a painting.

Cut and folded serigraphs, paper wire, inject prints. Dimensions variable
An assemblage of hanging mobiles and inject prints (photographic stills) look at a notion of Vertigo - the fear of falling vis-à-vis a simultaneous temptation (desire) to let go and to surrender to the fall.
A notion of Vertigo, as both a physical phenomenon and as sensory and cognitive duplicity, operates here as a figurative and formal device. Stressing the spectator as an active agent in the constitution of the artwork and its essential condition for its completeness, the installation’s warping moiré and shifting effects are not merely directed to the eye but to experiences which affect the entire body and demand the viewer to be in motion in front of or in relation to the work—marking a departure away from a usual secure position of set composition, in favour of mutable and unstable vertigo-like effects and sensory overload. Here, the sensory fabric of the work and the psyche of the spectator provide a mesmeric spiral of uncertainty and reflects that perception is far from objective and somewhat easy to destabilise and deceive and points to the way we see things always depends on our point of view.

I have used the techniques of stone lithography to create the variety of shapes and patterns in the undulating landscape formed by the vineyards, and built layers of semi transparent colour to create the final image. I have used the techniques involved in stone lithography to suggest the undulating sundrenched slopes behind the Mediteranean town of Collioure in southern France, and the shapes, patterns and texture of the vineyards. There, in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility, the hillsides are dotted with small stone huts called casots, acting as visual anchor points in the landscape. Used by the vineyard workers for storage and shelter, some are crumbling, others painted in exotic pinks and blues.

Stone Lithograph
h: 47 w: 38 (cms).
Once considered remote the Greek island of Tinos still retains some of that atmosphere, distanced by the strong Aegean wind and stormy sea. A now barren landscape of red earth and crumbling stone terraces, once supporting fertile crops, reflects the island's history in the highly and individually decorated dovecotes found dotted across the hillsides and congregating in the sheltered valleys. I have used layers of semi transparent colour and lithographic touche wash on the stone to build up texcture and pattern, reflecting the often disintegrating stonework of these traditional and monolithic structures.

Acrylic on Canson paper
h: 23 w: 31 (cms).
Dimensions are size of actual image. I foresee this firstly on mount card with 10cm surround in simple narrow black frame.
This painting is one of my 'Landings' series, an experiment into the area of Expressionist style paintings, simple in execution but using foreboding colours and landscapes/seascapes. I am in a vulnerable category regarding age and being diabetic in this lockdown, so there has never been a better time to experiment with Expressionism! I'm guessing that I have also been encouraged by viewing a recent exhibition at the Royal Academy in London of works by Leon Spilleart.
Many people in my situation must be feeling an underlying anxiety with thoughts of mortality. For me it has brought up images from Greek/Roman mythology. Charon, the boatman of the River Styx. A glimpse of the distant and unknown landscape of the Afterlife. But I remain hopeful !
