I am driven by the artistic process. I work in series, producing pieces reliant on action and
spontaneity; using a variety of tools to apply different mediums to a surface. Varying
process, tools, mediums and surfaces gives the work unpredictability. Outcomes are often
unclear, but experience has enabled me to embrace the uncertainty of this process.
Working in this way, being led by chance, is often a starting point which reveals the limbs of something new
Mark Walter lives and works in St Leonards as a full-time artist and has a BA & MA in fine art. He is also an Art writer and has had articles published by the local press in Hastings/St Leonards.
His artwork has evolved from initially investigating environmental issues, towards a more process-led practice. Each project consists of multiple works, in a range of different media, grouped around specific themes and meanings. During research and production, new areas of interest arise and lead to the next body of work.
His use of natural materials initially stemmed from his previous horticultural career. He has developed this into a material language that incorporates oils, biro and graphite, earth, PVA glue, plaster, photography, and digital and printing processes.
His work has recently moved towards a more process & surface-led practice and exploring impasto techniques. As well as incorporating his struggles with dyslexia. This has been influenced by artists such as Oscar Murillo, Christopher Wool, Lawrence Carroll, Frank Auchbach & Zebedee Jones it is essential for his practice that he is not restricted to any material. He is never without a sketchbook, and the focused process of drawing is integral to his practice.
