A kayak fisherman leaves the safe embrace of harbour, paddling out into open sea in the direction of a sunlit headland, and in the pursuit becomes at one with boat and fishing lure. I paint the exhilaration and ecstasy of this moment lived in the raw, pursuing a playful exuberance in paint that threatens to descend into chaos. In aspiring to make contemporary cave painting (or even a crudely cased trophy fish) my work declares a self centred but brittle vanity; fragility before the engulfing wave; a yearning for the unattainable; a sexual desire and the ever present threat of death, of fishing and fucking.
