I have used the techniques of stone lithography to create the variety of shapes and patterns in the undulating landscape formed by the vineyards, and built layers of semi transparent colour to create the final image. These hillsides lie apart from the busy coastal towns of southern France and provide an atmosphere of remote peacefulness, accessed by narrow lanes winding through the vineyards.

Stone Lithograph

I have used the techniques involved in stone lithography to suggest the undulating sundrenched slopes behind the Mediteranean town of Collioure in southern France, and the shapes, patterns and texture of the vineyards. There, in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility, the hillsides are dotted with small stone huts called casots, acting as visual anchor points in the landscape. Used by the vineyard workers for storage and shelter, some are crumbling, others painted in exotic pinks and blues.

Dovecote at Dusk, Tinos

Stone Lithograph

Once considered remote the Greek island of Tinos still retains some of that atmosphere, distanced  by the strong Aegean wind and stormy sea. A now barren landscape of red earth and crumbling stone terraces, once supporting fertile crops, reflects the island's history in the highly and individually decorated dovecotes found dotted across the hillsides and congregating in the sheltered valleys. I have used layers of semi transparent colour and lithographic touche wash on the stone to build up texcture and pattern, reflecting the often disintegrating stonework of these traditional and monolithic structures.
