This work was made to celebrate the Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s purchase of land linking their Cley Nature Reserve with the next coastal village of Salthouse as part of their Living Coast Project

I  referred to the relevant historic connections as follows:

…… In the Domesday Book of 1086, Salthouse is entered simply as ‘a house for the storing of salt.’  Long before this, salt was made by the then worldwide method of boiling sea water in clay vessels; Cley is Anglo-Saxon ‘claeg’ for clay.  It follows then that these two adjacent coastal settlements have connections going way back in time....

The clay (Cley) bowls seen here represent those bowls used historically to make the salt to be stored in the salt house.

Sunburst

There is a wild and beautiful isolated peninsular on the north Norfolk coast known as Blakeney Point.  I stayed there for a few nights in an old coast guard cottage locals call the Blakeney WatchHouse a little while ago and made this piece on the beach out of razor shells which had been washed up with the tide.

The early morning or late evening light on the installation reminded me of a sunburst, so this is what I called it.
