I paint to capture something of the world around me. Usually, there is some element that I want to explore in a painting, whether that be a particularly engaging composition or perspective, the deep colours and textures of water or sky or the layers of a street or building. As I am painting, it is a process of discovery as well as creation. Whilst I sketch often, I rarely do more than one preparatory sketch for an artwork and regularly the first sketches I make are on the canvas itself. So as I begin each painting, I go into it not knowing what the ending will be. The pace at which a painting comes along varies, my interest might wane slightly, I work on a different painting, I experiment with a different medium. It is only towards the end of the process that I begin to see the purpose behind my image and how the image captured on the canvas reflects my emotions and what it was that I was subconsciously looking for in the canvas.

Owen Clark is a painter with a background in architecture. His work focuses on representing moments with landscapes, either natural or manmade. Utilising the paint to capture more than an image, imbuing emotion depth and texture to the work. Typically working with acrylics but also using pen, pastel and at times even coffee, Owen uses his art to investigate, study and respond to the world around him.
