Solar print

We came across some cattle whilst out driving and stopped so our son Torrin could have a look. I was struck by the gaze this one gave us. I made a quick drawing. Years later in a workshop I made this print using solar plate etching which uses a light sensitised steel backed polymer material as an alternative to the more traditional intaglio printing.

This is a drawing from a photograph I took of my late husband David and son Torrin on on a trip to the Hebrides. We had stopped to play by a stream and I enjoyed watching father and son damn build. It has particular sentimental meaning to me as it was the last Scotland trip we made as a family. David sadly died of cancer aged 48 yrs in 2016.

mixed media - acrylic base with oil bar and oil pastel

I love the combination of colours found in the sea, mountain, skies and beaches of the Hebridean Islands. They inform all my work even when I'm not painting them! This is a fictional scene although the landscape and boat are real they are from two different drawings. I often wonder about people who spend time at sea and part of me wishes I had some of what it takes to live that life.
