The piece was created this year and comes from a series of drawings, and mixed media work based on feelings of guilt. Such negative emotions leads to sensations such as suffocation and claustrophobia. No matter how you try to move away from someone or something they are always there, trapped in feelings of guilt due to the failure to live up to obligations or duty. I have used the imagery of the rib cage and lungs to represent these senses as this is where most of the tension is held when experiencing guilt. The notion of drowning and being suffocated by a sense of guilt is conjured up in this imagery. This piece has been slightly abstracted as I like to give the viewer an opportunity to consider possibilities rather than being told.
I have no immediate link with the Outer Hebrides, although I have some Gaelic and have visited Lewis.
