Statement

This series draws on symbolism and metaphor from the Outer Hebrides and Iceland, exploring faith and existence in the face of a human crisis..

A sense of belonging underpins my photographic work, which varies from the wildly abstract to more literal representations of the natural world. For me, the art of photography is process-based, using the camera as a tool to express my engagement with any given location or subject. Deep immersion is necessary, and I often spend many hours and days on just a few meters of stream or coast, delving into possibilities, experimenting, observing the ever-shifting interplay of light with matter. Pondering our rapidly changing, disharmonious presence as a race, our separation from our origins, finds expression in my work, asking questions and seeking responses.

Spending many camera-free hours roaming on the hillsides of the southern uplands in Scotland or the wooded slopes around our smallholding in the Alpes-Maritime helps build my mental scrapbook and incubate ideas.

I'm currently exploring alternative processes and mixed media work, as well as installations.  A key factor is trying to source and use either waste or recycled materials and environmentally acceptable paints, inks etc.
