Veera Kaamos Pitkänen’s main technique is hand cut paper collage. She uses solely recycled materials, pairing up Renaissance painting with scientific contemporary photography. Images of space, nature, architecture and fashion merge seamlessly with classic works of art. Carefully arranged compositions, bold choices of colour and attention to detail is typical to her work.
Pitkänen draws inspiration from world mythologies, art history, literature, biology and the esoteric. As a deep ecologist, she sources all of the materials for her collage works from bins, recycling centres and flea markets. The choice of material is often reflected in her artworks that ponder on themes of rejection, loneliness and nature’s distress. Self-taught in her intricate collage techniques, Pitkänen adopts the perspective of an outsider in society.
